On May 20th, University Hospital “Lozenetz” performed for the first time in Bulgaria an innovative endovascular vascular procedure using the BYCROSS system — a single-use, next-generation atherectomy device. The procedure was successfully carried out on three patients by Dr. Asen Todorov’s team, who is a specialist with extensive experience in vascular, visceral, and oncovascular surgery.
BYCROSS is a minimally invasive system designed for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease. The device mechanically removes atheromatous plaques and thrombi while also performing aspiration — a process that significantly reduces the risk of complications, including distal embolism.
Thanks to its expandable rotating tip, BYCROSS adapts to different vessel diameters and allows safe passage through completely occluded segments — without the need for pre-dilation or guiding wires. This makes it especially suitable for lesions in the femoro-popliteal segment, including those in stented areas, which previously required more invasive approaches such as bypass surgery.
With this procedure, the team at University Hospital “Lozenetz” affirms its position among leading European clinics that introduce cutting-edge technologies into modern vascular surgery. The patients undergoing the procedure are in stable condition, discharged on the second post-procedure day, and report feeling very well, demonstrating the method’s efficacy and safety.
“This is a significant step forward for our hospital and for vascular surgery in Bulgaria. The BYCROSS system provides us with effective treatment options and a new approach for complex vascular lesions, with minimal risk to the patient,” said Dr. Asen Todorov.
“Lozenetz” University Hospital continues to implement the most advanced medical technologies, focusing on safety, effectiveness, and patient care.
